misi-zaagiing is the original Anishinaabemowin word that settlers reshaped into “Mississauga.” It means “those at the great river mouth,” describing the people who lived along the Credit River where it meets the vast waters of the Great Lakes. Over time, the word was taken and adapted into a city name, while the meaning—rooted in land, water, and community—was pushed aside.
